From Concrete to Carrots: How a Community Garden Transformed a Neglected Car Park

From Concrete to Carrots: How a Community Garden Transformed a Neglected Car Park

Two years ago, the corner of Elm Street and Station Road was a derelict car park, a magnet for fly-tipping and anti-social behaviour. Today, it’s a thriving community garden, producing over 500kg of fresh vegetables a year for local families.

The transformation was led by a group of residents who, tired of waiting for the council to act, took matters into their own hands. Armed with crowdfunded cash and donated tools, they broke up the tarmac and built raised beds, a composting system, and a rainwater harvesting setup.

"We just got sick of looking at it," says Maria Jones, one of the project's founders. "Now, it's the heart of our neighborhood. People come here to garden, to chat, to learn. The kids know where their food comes from." The garden provides free produce to anyone who helps out, with the surplus going to a local food bank.
